At Hami DajuVai (HDV), we believe that true transformation happens when individuals break free from societal norms and become changemakers in their own communities. Through our programs, we have witnessed powerful stories of courage, growth, and advocacy that continue to inspire us. Breaking Barriers: Ramesh’s Journey to Redefining Masculinity

“I used to believe that a ‘real man’ should never show emotions. Now, I understand that being strong means being empathetic.”

Ramesh Gurung, a 19-year-old from a rural village, grew up in an environment where boys were told that showing emotions is a sign of weakness. He was conditioned to believe that men should be dominant, aggressive, and unyielding.

Everything changed when Ramesh joined HDV’s Redefining Masculinity Workshops. Through interactive sessions and peer discussions, he learned about toxic masculinity, emotional intelligence, and gender equality. Initially hesitant, he soon started sharing his thoughts and questioning old beliefs.

Today, Ramesh is a peer mentor, educating younger boys in his community about breaking free from rigid gender roles. He openly discusses topics like mental health, consent, and healthy masculinity, proving that change starts with one person willing to challenge the norm.

A Father's Transformation: Rajendra’s Story

"I was raised to believe that household chores were only for women. Now, I proudly share responsibilities with my wife and teach my son the same.” Rajendra Tamang, a 45-year-old father of two, never thought he would question the traditional roles of men and women in his family. Like many men in his community, he believed that domestic work was solely a woman's duty, while men were responsible for earning. After attending HDV’s Fatherhood for Gender Equality Program, Rajendra had an eye-opening experience. He realized how gender roles limit opportunities for both men and women. He started helping with household work, supporting his wife’s career aspirations, and teaching his son about gender equality. Now, Rajendra is an active advocate for shared responsibilities at home, inspiring other men in his community to become equal partners in family life. His story demonstrates that gender equality starts within the home and that fathers play a crucial role in shaping future generations.

Challenging Menstrual Taboos: Sita’s Fight for Change

"I used to be ashamed of menstruation. Now, I educate boys and girls about menstrual health.” In many communities, menstruation remains a taboo topic, leading to shame, misinformation, and exclusion for girls. Sita Lama, a 17-year-old student, faced stigma and discrimination simply because of her natural biological cycle. She was banned from entering kitchens and temples during her periods and forced to hide her sanitary pads from male family members. After attending HDV’s MENstruation Talk with MEN program, Sita saw a new perspective. She learned that menstruation is not a shameful topic but a natural process that should be openly discussed. Inspired by the discussions, she took the bold step of starting conversations about menstruation in her school, involving both boys and girls in the discussions. Today, Sita leads awareness campaigns that educate students on menstrual health and fights against harmful traditions that isolate women during menstruation. Her courage has inspired her peers to embrace menstrual equity and demand better education on menstrual health.

From Bystander to Advocate: Anish’s Stand Against Street Harassment

"I used to ignore street harassment. Now, I intervene and educate others about consent and respect.” Anish Shrestha, a college student, used to think catcalling and street harassment were ‘normal’ behaviors. Like many young men, he witnessed harassment in public places but never spoke up, believing it was not his responsibility to intervene. After participating in HDV’s Boys’ Engagement in Anti-Harassment Campaign, Anish realized that remaining silent contributes to the problem. He learned how to safely intervene, educate his peers, and challenge the toxic ‘boys will be boys’ mindset. Now, Anish is a vocal advocate against street harassment, organizing workshops and awareness campaigns in his college. His story highlights the importance of male allies taking an active role in ending gender-based violence.
